A name proposed by American linguist J. H. Greenberg. It includes what were previously called the Semitic-Hamitic languages, including Semitic (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Gurage, etc.), Egyptian (dead languages, such as Coptic), Berber (Tamazight, Rif, Kabyle, Tuareg, etc.), and Cushitic (Beja, Sidamo, Afar, Galla, Somali, Rendille, Iraqi, etc.), as well as Hausa, one of the largest languages in Black Africa, and its surrounding languages (collectively known as the Chadic language family). However, there are still many problems that remain in systematic research on these languages.
