Afro-Asiatic languages

A name proposed by American linguist J. H. Greenberg. It includes what were previously called the Semitic-Hamitic languages, including Semitic (Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Amharic, Tigrinya, Tigre, Gurage, etc.), Egyptian (dead languages, such as Coptic), Berber (Tamazight, Rif, Kabyle, Tuareg, etc.), and Cushitic (Beja, Sidamo, Afar, Galla, Somali, Rendille, Iraqi, etc.), as well as Hausa, one of the largest languages ​​in Black Africa, and its surrounding languages ​​(collectively known as the Chadic language family). However, there are still many problems that remain in systematic research on these languages.

アメリカの言語学者グリーンバーグJ. H. Greenbergの提唱した名称。セム語派（アラビア語、ヘブライ語、アラム語、アムハラ語、ティグリニャ語、ティグレ語、グラゲ語など）、エジプト語派（死語。コプト語など）、ベルベル語派（タマジグト語、リフ語、カビール語、トゥアレグ語など）、クシ語派（ベジャ語、シダモ語、アファール語、ガラ語、ソマリ語、レンディーレ語、イラク語など）の従来セム・ハム語族とよばれてきたものに、ブラック・アフリカ最大の言語の一つであるハウサ語、およびその周辺の諸言語（これらをまとめてチャド語派とよぶ）を付け加えたもの。ただし、これらの系統論的研究には、いまなお種々の問題点が残されている。
