Chichibu [city] - Chichibu

Japanese: 秩父[市] - ちちぶ
Chichibu [city] - Chichibu
A city in western Saitama prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The central city, located in the Chichibu Basin, has long been developed as a center of sericulture. Since the Meiji era, it has been known as a production center of Chichibu meisen, a modern patterned fabric, but it has now declined, replaced by synthetic fiber fabrics for clothing. In addition, the cement industry in the Kagemori district, which uses limestone from Mt. Buko as its raw material, and the lumber industry, which has the mountainous backdrop of Okuchichibu, were thriving, but in recent years the electrical equipment industry has grown significantly. The city's manufacturing shipments amounted to 99 billion yen (2003). The city is served by the Chichibu Railway and Seibu Railway, and National Route 140 is connected to Yamanashi prefecture by the Karisaka Tunnel. It is home to one of the Thirty-Four Pilgrimage Temples of Chichibu, Chichibu Shrine, which is famous for its Chichibu Night Festival, one of Japan's three major floats, and many tourist farms for strawberries and grapes, and is blessed with tourist resources such as Mt. Mitake (Mitake Shrine), Futase Dam, and Nakatsu Valley. In April 2005, the towns of Yoshida, Otaki, and Arakawa in Chichibu County were incorporated. Area: 577.83 km2 . Population: 66,955 (2010).
