The aspect ratio of an aircraft wing. It is expressed as the square of the wingspan divided by the planar area of the wing. When the planform is rectangular, it is equal to the value obtained by dividing the wingspan by the chord length. In general, the long and slender wings of subsonic aircraft have a large aspect ratio, while the short wings of supersonic fighter aircraft have a small aspect ratio. The aerodynamic characteristics of an aircraft wing (three-dimensional wing) are greatly influenced by the airfoil shape and aspect ratio. As the aspect ratio increases, the induced drag (resistance that occurs in exchange for the lift generated by a three-dimensional wing) decreases, and conversely, as the aspect ratio decreases, the induced drag increases.
