Craftsman - Saikujo

A workshop run by a feudal lord who controlled craftsmen in a variety of fields in order to secure high-quality handicraft products. They began to appear around the mid-Heian period after the government-run workshops of the Ritsuryo state were dismantled. They are broadly divided into home workshops such as In workshops and Sekkanke workshops that were privately owned by powerful aristocrats, and kuni workshops that were shared by local lords who gathered in kokuga (provincial offices). Kuni workshops disappeared around the mid-Kamakura period, but home workshops were established in the Kamakura shogunate and continued to exist until the early modern period under the daimyo families.

領主が高級手工業製品の確保のために、多様な部門の工匠を把握して経営する工房。律令(りつりょう)国家の官営工房が解体したあと、平安中期ごろから現れ始めた。有力貴族が私的に保有する院細工所・摂関家細工所などの家産工房と、国衙(こくが)に結集する在地領主が共有する国(くに)細工所に大別される。国細工所は鎌倉中期ごろに姿を消すが、家産工房としての細工所は、鎌倉幕府などにも置かれ、近世の大名家の細工所まで継続する。
