(1) Book size. In Japan, there have been historical changes in the size of paper, as follows: (1) The size of Japanese-bound books using washi paper, such as Minoban and Hanshiban, which use Minoshi and Hanshi paper. (2) The size of Western-bound books using Western paper from the early Meiji period, such as Kikuban and Shirokuban. (3) The size determined by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) and used to this day. Standard size. There are two systems, A and B, each ranging from size 0 to size 12. For example, they are called A4 size and B5 size (A4 size is the size of A size 0 folded in half four times, and B5 size is the size of B size 0 folded in half five times). Non-standard sizes include A size 20 pieces and B size 40 pieces (shinsho size). (2) A general term used in the West to indicate the number of times a full sheet of paper is folded. For example, there are folios, which are made by folding a full sheet of paper once to make four pages, and quatos, which are made by folding a full sheet twice. These are used when detailed bibliographic descriptions are required, such as for rare books.
