A representative long epic poem by Italian poet Tasso. It is in the form of eight-line rhyming poems of 11 syllables, and consists of 20 songs and 1,917 stanzas. Set against the backdrop of the Counter-Reformation and the victory of Christian countries at the Battle of Lepanto, it is based on the First Crusade and was completed in 1575 after more than a decade of planning. The story is constructed based on the traditions of heroic epic and chivalric literature from Virgil to Ariosto, and unfolds in a tangle of historical facts about the Crusades, centered on the battles leading up to the liberation of Jerusalem, and fantastical fiction mixed with legends. The underlying theme is the tragic death of the hero and the failure of a fateful love, from which we can see the essence of Tasso's unique, dark poetic world, in which the protagonist eventually descends into madness.
