The kingdom of the Mossi people was probably formed in the mid-15th century in the savannah region of the interior of West Africa, now Burkina Faso (formerly Upper Volta). According to legend, the Mossi people were founded when a tomboyish princess from Gambaga (now northern Ghana) ran away on horseback and married a hunter from the north in the wilderness, giving birth to a boy named Ouédraogo (meaning stallion). Ouédraogo led many mounted warriors north from Gambaga, and ruled over the weak agricultural people. It is said that the Mossi people were gradually formed through intermarriage between the two.
