The crystal structure of aluminum alum with a typical M ^III = Al (ionic radius 0.68 Å) is described below. The most common aluminum potassium alum is M ^I = K (ionic radius 1.52 Å), and its constituent units are [K(H ₂ O) ₆ ] ⁺ (K―OH ₂ ＝2.94 Å), [Al(H ₂ O) ₆ ] ³⁺ (Al―OH ₂ ＝1.98 Å), and SO ₄ ^2- . As shown in the figure, octahedral [K(H ₂ O) ₆ ] ⁺ and [Al(H ₂ O) ₆ ] ³⁺ are lined up alternately and connected three-dimensionally, with tetrahedral SO ₄ ^2- inserted into the cube they form.
