A diagram is a drawing that records or explains the internal and external structure of an organism. Among these, human anatomical drawings in particular were not simply medical illustrations. Their history is also a history of changes in the view of humanity and one way of expressing it. For example, the ancient Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion meridian diagrams based on the theory of yin and yang and the five elements, the internal view diagrams of the five internal organs, and popular diagrams derived from these are all diagrams that illustrate a certain view of the human body and were deeply rooted in Eastern countries. Islamic medicine also played a role as an intermediary between ancient Greek and Roman medicine and Western medicine, but the Islamic world was extremely cautious about creating figurative human figures, so scientific illustration made little progress.

生物体の内･外部の構造を記録，あるいは解説するために表された図をいう。そのうち特に人体解剖図は単なる医学的挿図ではなかった。その歴史は，人間観とその一表現の変遷史でもあった。たとえば古代中国における陰陽五行説に基づく鍼灸の経絡図，五臓六腑の内景図，あるいはそれらから派生する通俗的な図解などは，人間の身体への一種の観念を図式化したもので，東洋諸国に根強く伝えられていた。また，イスラムの医学は古代ギリシア･ローマ医学と西欧医学との仲介者としての役割を果たしたが，イスラム世界では人間像の造形化にきわめて慎重だったために，科学的な図像化はほとんど進展しなかった。
