An industrial city in the northern tip of Orissa state in northeastern India. Also known as Rourkela. Population 140,000 (1991), metropolitan population 399,000 (1991). Located at the confluence of the Koel and Sankh rivers, which flow through the northern Orissa mountains. Construction of a steel mill began in 1955 with assistance from West Germany, using the iron ore and coal produced in the area. It began operation in 1959, and grew from a small Adivasi village into a city. Heavy machinery, chemical fertilizer, chemical, and other industries were also established in the city, and it is part of the heavy industrial zone surrounding the eastern part of the Chhota Nagpur Plateau. インド北東部,オリッサ州北端部の工業都市。ラーウルケーラーRourkelaとも呼ばれる。人口14万(1991),大都市域人口39万9000(1991)。オリッサ山地北部を流れるコーエル川とサーンク川との合流点にある。周辺に産する鉄鉱石と石炭をもとに,1955年から製鉄・製鋼所の建設が西ドイツの援助のもとに進められ,59年操業開始,アディバーシ族の小村から都市に成長した。さらに重機械,化学肥料,化学などの諸工業の立地が進み,チョタ・ナーグプル高原東部を取り巻く重工業地帯の一角を構成している。
