Intravascular coagulation syndrome (DISC)

Also known as DIC, this condition occurs when blood coagulation in blood vessels becomes abnormally enhanced due to infection, cancer, extensive burns, or trauma, causing blood clots in capillaries throughout the body. At this time, a large amount of clotting factors and platelets are consumed, leading to deficiency and an increased tendency to bleed. At the same time, each organ becomes dysfunctional due to ischemia, and renal failure, respiratory failure, liver failure, and other conditions appear simultaneously, affecting each other and resulting in a condition called multiple organ failure (MOF). Bleeding can range from initial skin bleeding to gastrointestinal bleeding and intracranial bleeding. DIC is extremely life-threatening, but it is difficult to improve the condition while the underlying disease persists.

DICとも呼ばれ，感染症や癌，広範囲の熱傷，外傷などに伴い，血管内で凝固機能が異常に亢進し，全身の毛細血管で血液凝固が発生することにより起る。このとき，凝固因子と血小板は大量に消費され，欠乏，出血傾向が強まる。同時に各臓器は虚血のために機能不全となり，腎不全，呼吸不全，肝不全などが一斉に出現し，互いに影響を及ぼして多臓器不全 (MOF) と呼ばれる状態になる。出血については初期の皮膚出血から消化管出血，頭蓋内出血も生じる。 DICに陥ると生命の危険はきわめて高いが，原因疾患が継続する間の改善は困難である。
