Contemporary African-American popular music that peaked in the 1960s. Rhythm and blues, which emerged just after World War II, was influenced by gospel songs, jazz, and white popular music, and was also stimulated by the rise of the civil rights movement symbolized by the March on Washington (1963), and developed into a musical form that expressed African-American sensibilities with a sophisticated sound. To distinguish this from earlier rhythm and blues, it is called soul music. In the 1960s, when African-American ethnic consciousness was on the rise, it was fashionable for African-Americans to call each other "soul brothers" and to refer to African-American cuisine as "soul food." 1960年代を頂点とする,アメリカ黒人の現代的な大衆音楽。
