A perennial plant of the Saxifragaceae family, it grows in sunny wetlands in mountains and plateaus. It has a short rhizome and densely packed basal leaves with long petioles. The leaves are heart-shaped and 1-3 cm in diameter. From August to October, several flower stalks emerge from the rhizome, each with a single white flower at the end. The flower stalk has a single sessile, egg-shaped stem leaf. The flower has five sepals, five petals, five stamens, a spherical ovary and a four-pronged style. The flower's shape resembles the crest of a plum blossom, hence the name. Closely related species include Shirahigesou, whose petals have deeply lobed, thread-like edges, and Himeumebachisou, which is slightly smaller and grows in alpine zones.
