An old town in Kaho District, on the right bank of the Onga River in the midstream, in north-central Fukuoka Prefecture. It developed as a coal mining town from the mid-Meiji period onwards, but the main coal mines began to decline in the early Showa period, and small and medium-sized mines also closed, making it the first place in Chikuho where people lost their jobs en masse. The town is involved in rice farming, grape cultivation and dairy cattle raising, and in recent years has been attracting businesses. In March 2006, it was incorporated into Iizuka City along with Shonai Town, Honami Town and Chikuho Town in Kaho District. 16.60 km2 . 7,069 people (2003).
