Hokongoin Temple

Japanese: 法金剛院 - ほうこんごういん
Hokongoin Temple

This is a Ritsu sect temple located in Hanazono Oginocho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City. It is called Goiyama. The principal image is Amida Nyorai. In the early Heian period, the mountain villa of the Minister of the Right, Kiyohara Natsuno, was turned into a temple after his death, and it was called Sokyu-ji and Tenan-ji. At the end of the Heian period, Taikenmon-in Shoshi, the Empress of Emperor Toba, restored it as Hokongo-in. The vast temple grounds have a beautiful garden and numerous buildings, and many visitors, including Saigyo, have been visited, and many waka poems have been composed here. It then fell into disrepair, but was restored in the Kamakura period by Engaku of Toshodaiji Temple, who spread the teachings of Yuzu Nembutsu, and in 1617 (Genwa 3), Shochin of Sennyuji Temple rebuilt it and made it a temple of learning for the four sects of Shingon, Tendai, Zen, and Jodo. It is home to important cultural properties such as the national treasure, the seated Amida Nyorai statue (1130, made by Inkaku), a wooden seated eleven-headed Kannon statue in a cabinet, and a lotus-style incense burner.
