Located in the southwest of the Syrian Arab Republic in Western Asia, it is one of the oldest cities in the world and was the capital of the Aramaean kingdom in the 10th century BC. After being destroyed by Assyria in 732 BC, it was ruled by ancient Persia, Greece, Rome, and others. It was occupied by Islam in 635 and prospered as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate. It was later attacked by the Crusaders and Timur, and conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1516. After World War I, it became a French mandate, and after Syria gained independence in 1946, it became its capital.
