An ancient Japanese custom of picking young deer antlers and medicinal herbs on May 5th. It was first seen in the entry for May 5th, 19th year of the reign of Empress Suiko (June 20th, 611 AD) in the Nihon Shoki. On this day, a medicinal hunt was held in Udano (the area around Ouda Town, Uda County, Nara Prefecture). The ministers who accompanied her wore crowns with edgy topknots and clothes in accordance with the color of the crown, and it was an event involving the entire imperial court. The following year, medicinal hunts were held in Haneda (near Houchi, Takatori Town, Takaichi County, Nara Prefecture), and in 668 (the 7th year of the reign of Emperor Tenchi), in Gamou-no (the area from Omihachiman City to Yokaichi City, Shiga Prefecture).
