A state in northeastern India. It has an area of 173,876 km2 and a population of 86.37 million (1991). Its capital is Patna. Topographically, the border is roughly 150 meters above sea level, and it is made up of the eastern half of the plain in the middle reaches of the Ganges River in the north and the Chhota Nagpur Plateau in the south. The former is further divided into north and south by the Ganga River, and the plain on the northern bank is made up of southeast-flowing rivers such as the Gandak River, except for the Kosi River, which flows south at the eastern end, and the northern end, bordering Nepal, is the Terai region. The Kosi River, which forms a large complex alluvial fan, is famous as one of India's roughest rivers, and has repeatedly flooded and changed course.
