1799‐1854 Portuguese poet and playwright. He was attracted to liberal ideas from the time he was a student at the University of Coimbra. In 1823, he fled to England for political reasons. This experience in England was of great importance to him. He then moved to France, where he came into contact with local literature. Not only did he establish Portuguese Romanticism, but he also became a reformer of Portuguese theater. His major works include the narrative poem Camões (1825), written in the style of Byron and Scott, the three-act play Gil Vicente (1838), the tragedy Friar Luís de Sousa (1844), and the novel The Bow of Santana (1845).
