Kaida [village] - Kaida

Japanese: 開田[村] - かいだ

A village in Kiso County, southwestern Nagano Prefecture. Population 1999 (1995). It is located at the northeastern foot of Mt. Ontake and borders Gifu Prefecture to the west. Almost the entire area is covered by forests and wilderness, with small amounts of cultivated land scattered along the Nishino River, the Banosawa River, and the Sue River, which flow south through the center, and settlements are scattered around. Formerly the birthplace of Kisokoma, today dairy and beef cattle are raised, and vegetables are also cultivated in the cool climate. The southwestern area is home to the Kaida Plateau, which is part of Ontake Prefectural Natural Park, and there are sports and recreational facilities such as campsites and golf courses.

長野県南西部，木曾郡の村。人口1999(1995)。御嶽山の北東麓にあり，西は岐阜県に接する。ほぼ全域が山林･原野で占められ，中央部を南流する西野川，把之沢川，末川沿いにわずかに耕地が開かれ，集落が点在する。かつては木曾駒の産地であったが，現在は乳･肉用牛が飼育され，また冷涼な気候を利用して野菜の栽培も盛んである。南西部一帯は御岳県立自然公園に属する開田高原が広がり，キャンプ場やゴルフ場などのスポーツ，レクリエーション施設がある。
