The next group to appear, the Machairodontinae, filled the gap left by Nimrabus' inability to kill large prey. Machairodontinae appeared in the early Miocene 26 million years ago and became extinct about 10,000 years ago in the Quaternary Period. Machairodontinae included the famous saber-toothed tiger, Smilodon .
