A region in northeastern Italy. It is one of the special regions with extensive autonomy, and its capital is Trieste. Its area is 7,845 km2, and its population is 1.19 million (1994). The Alps, which separate Austria and Italy, run east to west in the north of the region, while the central part is dominated by gentle hills and plains, and the southern part facing the Mediterranean Sea is a plain with many marshes. Although the Alps are to the north, the climate is generally warm, with an average annual temperature of 6°C in the mountains and 13°C in the plains. With the exception of Trieste and Gorizia, there is little industry, and the region's economy is supported by agriculture, livestock farming, and handicraft production, making it a relatively poor region even by Italian standards.
