(1) Middle Ages In the Middle Ages, allegories related to Christian morality became mainstream. Prudentius' Psychomachia (398-400) is one of the most important allegorical epics in the Western world. The theme of the "battle of souls" became one of the most beloved allegories of the early Middle Ages, as it personified the conflict between virtue and sin within the human soul and the victory of Christian faith over paganism.
