Maji. ⑥ An evergreen herb of the fern family Uraginaceae. Widely distributed from central Honshu south to the tropical regions of East Asia, it grows in colonies in warm areas. The rhizome is long and wire-like, creeping underground. The leaves have thick brown stalks, are bipinnate compound leaves 50-100 cm long, deeply lobed like comb teeth, bright green on the upper surface, and white on the lower surface. The sporangia are located halfway between the midvein and the edge, and have no envelope. The leaves are used as New Year decorations as they symbolize marital harmony and white hair (longevity ) , and the leaf stalks are used for chopsticks and baskets . Urajirogusa. Urajiro bracken.
