Originally from Lombardy, they allied with the House of Habsburg and established a postal system within their territories, which they used to gain economic and social status. First, in 1516, F. von Taxis was granted a monopoly on postal services in the Spanish Empire. In 1695, he was appointed Postmaster General of the Holy Roman Empire and the Netherlands, and in 1615, this position became hereditary for the family. At the same time, he was also listed as an imperial prince (noble), and in 1650, he was allowed to use his coat of arms, took the name Thurn-Taxis, and in 1695, he was promoted to the rank of Prince Fürst.
