A Soviet children's author. His real name was Ilya Yakovlevich Marshak, and he was the younger brother of the poet Samuil Yakovlevich Marshak. He was born on December 29, 1895 (January 10, 1896 in the Gregorian calendar) in Bakhmut (now Artyomovsk). He graduated from Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1925. While still a student there, he began contributing scientific reading material to children's magazines around 1924. His work The Story of the Great Plan (1930), about the First Five-Year Plan, was a huge success and was highly praised by Gorky. His talent for explaining complex scientific phenomena in simple terms and praising the value of labor and socialist construction in poetic language opened up new horizons in children's literature around the world. His most famous work is How Man Became a Giant (1946, translated into Japanese as The History of Man and The Progress of Man), co-written with his wife, Mrs. Segal. His many other works, including Mountains and Man (1935) and Journey to the Atom (1948), have been introduced in other countries. He passed away on November 15, 1953.
