...But some folk songs were passed down orally, and later, during the Yi Dynasty, they were included in the "Gakhakgibom" (1493) and "Gakjangsong" (compiled during the reign of Jungjong and Myeongjong in the first half of the 16th century), and we can learn the Korean lyrics. Only about 20 of these "Koryo folk songs" remain, but all of them have been handed down for a long time because they are excellent poems. "Simogyoku," which sings of longing for one's mother, "Kashiri" and "Seosanbyeolgyoku," which lament the separation from a lover, and "Dongdong," which is a seasonal song, are the quintessence of Korean classical poetry. The people of the Goryeo period must have suffered great hardship from repeated foreign invasions and civil wars, but their emotions as seen in folk songs are rich, free, and strong....
