…Fauvism was represented by the sculptor Wouters, while the robust, constructive Belgian version of Expressionism was represented by painters such as Constant Permeke (1886-1952) of the second "Latemse school." On the other hand, the first "Latem school," which preceded them, was led by the painter Valerius de Saedeleer (1867-1941), who settled in the small village of Sint-Martens-Latem near Ghent in the early 20th century. They sought to depict the mysteries of reality, drawing on nature and the traditions of their own country. The art of Jacob Smits (1855-1928), who created works near Antwerp, also has something in common with this. …
