Tabora (English spelling)

A city in central-western Tanzania. The capital of Tabora Region. It is located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,200 m, about 350 km east of Kigoma. It was founded by Arabs in 1820 as a base for the slave and ivory trade. It is a junction of the railway line from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza and Kigoma, and a distribution center for corn, groundnuts, tobacco, rice, and other crops produced in the surrounding area. In 1858, it became the base for explorer J. Speke's exploration of Lake Victoria. The houses where explorers H. Stanley and D. Livingstone lived remain nearby. There is a domestic airport. Population: 214,641 (estimated 1985).
