The system currently used in Japan and other Western countries has had a selective identification feature (SIF) added since around 1950 to improve secrecy and improve the ability to selectively identify individual friendly aircraft and ships, and is sometimes called a SIF device. The device is composed of an interrogator on the ground (or ship) and a transponder mounted on the aircraft (or ship), and its purposes include identifying friendly and enemy aircraft, identifying specific friendly aircraft, extending and facilitating the range of interception or traffic control, and displaying emergency situations. …
