…Among them, Benny Goodman started the “swing boom” through radio and records in 1935, when the economy was finally improving after the Great Depression. His music was big band jazz with a white sound, based on arrangements by J. Fletcher Henderson (1897-1952), who led the black band in which Armstrong was a member. However, he avoided the word “jazz” and called it “swing music.” As the economy was recovering, people accepted his music as healthy and cheerful, a kind of music for reforming society. …
