His critiques, fragments, and articles published in the Romantic journal Athenaeum, which he edited and published with his brother August Wilhelm Schlegel, were a comprehensive expression of Romantic literary theory, and his novel Lucinde (1799) was an experimental attempt at this. With its arabesque style that deconstructed the existing novel (romantic) form, Lucinde became a pioneering work of modern anti-romanticism.
