A small earthquake that occurs near the epicenter of a main shock before the main shock. It is difficult to recognize a foreshock before the main shock because there is no noticeable difference from other earthquakes. Even with large earthquakes, foreshocks are often not observed. Foreshocks often occur several hours to several days before the main shock, but can also occur several minutes or months before.
