Foreshock

A small earthquake that occurs near the epicenter of a main shock before the main shock. It is difficult to recognize a foreshock before the main shock because there is no noticeable difference from other earthquakes. Even with large earthquakes, foreshocks are often not observed. Foreshocks often occur several hours to several days before the main shock, but can also occur several minutes or months before. 本震の前に、本震の震源近くに発生する小さな地震。前震以外の地震と目立った違いがなく、本震の前に前震と認識することは困難。大地震でも、前震は観測されないことが多い。前震は、本震の数時間から数日前に起こることが多いが、数分前、数カ月前のこともある。
