A city in western Ehime Prefecture facing the Iyo Nada Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Most of the area is mountainous, with the Hiji River running through it. The city center, through which the Yosan Line passes, developed after 1617 as the castle town of the Kato clan, which had a fief of 60,000 koku, and is famous for its beautiful scenery. It once prospered as a producer of real wax and high-quality Iyo thread, but has now fallen into decline. The former mulberry fields have been turned into rice paddies and fields, and rice and vegetables are grown. Cormorant fishing on the Hiji River and potato cooking in the fall attract many tourists. The Uchiko Line and Matsuyama Expressway pass through the city. In January 2005, Nagahama Town, Hijikawa Town, and Kawabe Village in Kita County were incorporated. 432.22 km2 . Population: 47,157 (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
