Ancient Chinese elevated architecture. Originally, dai was a square elevated platform built by tamping down the earth, and xie was a wooden building built on top of an elevated platform; elevated buildings of this type are collectively called tai-xi. The term tai-xi appears in documents from the Spring and Autumn period onwards, including the Book of Shang, and tai-xi architecture was particularly popular in various countries during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, where it was used for purposes such as escaping the summer heat, observing the weather, and storing things. Not limited to single-story structures, excavated remains include stepped pyramids with several stories surrounded by wooden buildings.
