Merlin, J.

...It is said to have originated in the Netherlands in the 18th century, and various types have been invented since then. There is also a record that the Belgian Joseph Merlin exhibited it in London around 1760. It spread throughout Europe and America in the early 19th century, and in 1863 James L. Plimpton of New York developed a system that connected the roller axle to the shoe with a vertical bolt (kingpin) similar to the mechanism of modern roller skates, allowing the skater to turn. This made it easier to ride, and it quickly became popular.
