Macapá (English spelling)

Macapá (English spelling)
The capital of Amapá state in northern Brazil. The central settlement is a port city located on the left bank of the Canal Norte, a major branch of the Amazon River at the mouth of the Amazon River, directly on the equator. The city sits on a low hill 12 meters above sea level. It is the commercial and industrial center of the state, with a large mining area behind it, and it ships manganese ores, as well as gold, iron, and tin ores. It also collects and distributes animal hides and fish, and has factories that produce vegetable oil and rubber. A road connects the main towns in the state to the north from the city, and a railway runs from the nearby port of Porto Santana to the mining area inland. It is connected to the large port city of Belem, about 300 km to the southeast, by ferry and air. Population: 179,609 (1991 estimate).
