Usually, it is an ornament attached to a horse's breast-tack (the "san-gai"), and a horse harness that emits a sound. It is made of bronze, and is cylindrical in shape, similar to a bronze bell, and has a tongue inside. In China, the prototype dates back to the Shang dynasty. In Japan, it has been known since the late Kofun period, but it usually has a curved lower edge, is about 15 cm high, and has a bead pattern or lattice pattern cast on only one side. 通常,馬の胸繋 (むながい。→三繋〈さんがい〉) につける装飾品,ならびに音を発する馬具。青銅製,扁円筒形で,形は銅鐸に似て内部に舌を有する。中国では殷代にその祖型がある。日本では古墳時代後期から知られるが,下縁が弧形で高さ 15cm内外,文様は珠文,格子文が片面にだけ鋳出されるのが普通である。
