Ichikawa uproar

...The townspeople were divided into three classes: katteban, tateban, and taiban. The katteban were landlords and landowners whose families served as year referees or higher, the tateban were artisans who worked at the castle, and the taiban were tenants and landowners. The upper classes of townspeople became shoza (satsusho) and purveyors to the government, and were allowed to use their surnames and carry swords by making large donations. They were deeply connected to the finances of the domain, and were the cause of the Ichikawa Uprising in 1860 (Man'en 1), when the domain's people stormed the castle town in large numbers to publicize the faults of the domain's administration. The population in 1649 (Keian 2) was 1,637 men and 1,520 women (367 families), and in 1864 (Genji 1) was 1,660 men and 1,814 women (979 families), and if the samurai population is added, it is estimated that the population was about 5,000.

…町人の身分は勝手判，立判，平判に分かれ，勝手判は年行司以上を務める家筋の家主，地主たち，立判は城に勤務する職人筋，平判は借家人や借地人たちである。上層部の町人は札座や御用商人となり多額の献金をして苗字帯刀を許され，藩財政に深く結びつき，1860年(万延1)藩政の非をならして領民が大挙城下に押し寄せた市川騒動の原因ともなった。人口は1649年(慶安2)男1637･女1520(家数367)，1864年(元治1)男1660･女1814(家数979)で，武家人口を加えると約5000人くらいと推定される。…
