Cultivation limit

Japanese: 栽培限界 - さいばいげんかい（英語表記）cultivation limit

This refers to the limit of the area in which various agricultural crops can be grown, determined by environmental conditions. The term arable limit is sometimes used to emphasize the limit at which it is economically viable. The environmental condition that has the most limiting effect on crop cultivation is climate, and cultivation limits are usually discussed in relation to the climatic elements of temperature and water. Temperature is the most important factor, and cultivation limits are determined by latitude and altitude on Earth. The growth of crops grown in warm climates is restricted by low temperatures, so there are northern limits (southern limits in the Southern Hemisphere) and altitude limits for their cultivation.

環境条件によって規定される各種農作物の栽培可能地域の限界をいい，とくに経済的に採算がとれる限界であることを強調するときには耕作限界という言葉を用いることがある。作物の栽培にもっとも限定的に働く環境条件は気候であり，気候要素としての温度および水をめぐって栽培限界が問題とされるのが普通である。とくに温度はもっとも重視される要因であり，地球上の緯度や標高によって栽培限界が規定される。暖地産の作物の生育は低温によって制約を受けるので，その栽培には北限(南半球では南限)や標高の限界がある。
