Pasargadae (English spelling)

Pasargadae (English spelling)
The first capital of the Achaemenid Empire. Located southeast of Persepolis in southwestern Iran. The name comes from the Persian tribe Pasargadae, from which the Achaemenid clan descended, and it is also called Pasargadae. In 550 BC, Cyrus the Great fought his final battle with the Median king here, and it is said that the women's encouragement helped his soldiers win the seemingly hopeless battle. After his victory, Cyrus built a city here, which became the imperial capital until it was replaced by Persepolis. Successive Persian kings ascended to the throne here, and every time a king entered the city, a piece of gold was presented to all the women in the city in commemoration of their ancestors' great achievements. The treasury was left behind after the capital was moved, but was handed over to Alexander III (the Great) in 330 BC. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2004. (→Pasargadae Ruins)
