…The first scientific expedition to Siberia was undertaken by the German scholar Daniel Gottlieb Messerschmidt (1685-1735), who was sent to Siberia by order of the Russian Tsar Peter I, mainly to study medicinal plants and minerals. He traveled from 1719 to 1727, covering the area up to the Lena River, collecting specimens of plants, animals, and minerals, as well as 20 linguistic documents, and leaving behind a detailed journal of his research.
