This machine is used to make many narrow pieces of fabric (ribbons, tapes, etc.) at the same time, and is said to have existed about a century before Cartwright's invention of the loom. It is unclear where or when it was invented, but it was used in the Netherlands around 1620, and in England this type of loom was called a Dutch engine loom. A patent for this loom was obtained in England in 1745, and in 1760 a device for making ribbons with floral patterns was also invented. It appears to have developed in a different way to ordinary looms. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
