Jikoin Temple

Japanese: 慈光院 - じこういん

This temple is of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism, Daitoku-ji school, located in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture. Its mountain name is Entsuzan. Katagiri Sekishu, the founder of the Sekishu school of tea ceremony, established the temple in 1663 (Kanbun 3) with Gyokushu Sogen of Daitoku-ji as the founder, for the soul of his late father, Sadataka. The temple is famous for its teahouse and shoin (Important Cultural Property), which are reminiscent of Sekishu's Zen and tea, as well as his skills as a shogunate construction magistrate, and its garden (Famous and Historical). Sekishu was the nephew of Katagiri Katsumoto, and was the lord of Koizumi Domain, which held a fief of 16,000 koku. He learned tea ceremony from Kuwayama Sosen, and founded the Sekishu school, which places the true meaning of tea ceremony in the state of wabi. He became the tea ceremony instructor for the shogun Tokugawa Ietsuna, and was praised for "the sword is Yagyu, and tea is Sekishu."

奈良県大和郡山市にある臨済宗大徳寺派の寺。山号は円通山。茶道石州流の始祖である片桐石州が，亡父貞隆の菩提のため，1663年(寛文3)大徳寺の玉舟宗璠を開山にして開創した。石州の禅と茶，また幕府普請奉行としての技術をしのばせる茶室と書院(重文)，それに庭園(名･史)があることで有名である。石州は片桐且元の甥にあたり，1万6000石を領した小泉藩主であった。茶道を桑山宗仙に学び，〈わびの境地〉を茶道の本義とする石州流を創し，将軍徳川家綱の茶道師範となって，〈剣は柳生，茶は石州〉と評された。
