Also known as quadriceps shortening syndrome, this condition occurs when the muscle tissue of the quadriceps becomes scarred, causing functional impairment, and is seen in growing children aged 5 to 6 years old. This condition was reported as early as 1946, but was thought to be congenital at the time. However, in the 1970s, cases began to occur frequently across the country, becoming a social problem. In response, the Japan Medical Association established a review committee in 1974, and clarified that the causes were either congenital or due to subcutaneous or intramuscular injections into the affected area.
