...Switzerland has many artists with a pure style, including Ernst Kreidolf (1863-1956) from the early 20th century, and many others, including Alois Carigiet, who was active in poster design but also illustrated picture books full of life set in mountain villages in the Alps, Hans E. Fischer, who drew light and elegant lines, and Felix Hoffmann, who adapted Grimm's fairy tales into picture books with profound realism.All of them produced beautiful, elegant, and extremely artistic picture books.

In France, Rodolphe Töpfer (1799-1846), who also influenced Bush, led the way, followed by G. Doret, who was a skilled caricaturist, and then Boutet de Monvel (1850-1913), who illustrated Joan of Arc (1896) and other picture books, and finally French picture books came to dominate the world. Then Andre Herre and Eddy Legrand, who used hand-drawn stencils to color, followed in the 1930s by Fyodor Rojankovsky and Nathalie Paran, who used lithographs to create a fresh and realistic style for Père Castor's Art Book.
