Kovar seal (English spelling)

Japanese: コバールシール（英語表記）Kovar seal

This method of sealing metal in glass uses Kovar, which has almost the same thermal expansion properties as hard glass. Kovar is the brand name for an alloy made of nickel, cobalt, and iron, sold by Westinghouse Electric in the United States. General Electric also sells it under the name Fernico. Wires and tubes made from these alloys can be sealed in or in contact with hard glass, making them a convenient metal material for connecting metal and glass, and they are widely used in electronic tube materials, etc.

ガラスに金属を封入(シール)する方法で，硬質ガラスと熱膨張特性がほとんど同じのコバールが利用される。コバールKovarとは，ニッケル，コバルトおよび鉄からなる合金の商品名で，アメリカのウェスティングハウス社が市販している。ゼネラル･エレクトリック社でもフェルニコFernicoと呼び市販している。これらの合金を用いてつくった線材や管は硬質ガラスに封入したり，接触させたりすることができ，金属とガラスをつなぐのに便利な金属材料で，電子管材料等に広く用いられる。
