Iraga (stinging moth) - Iraga

Japanese: イラガ(刺蛾) - イラガ
Iraga (stinging moth) - Iraga
A general term for insects belonging to the Lepidoptera family Limacodidae, or one of these species. Adults are small to medium-sized, and larvae are drop- or slug-shaped caterpillars. They are found almost worldwide, with 27 species found in Japan. The larvae lack abdominal and uropods, and have fleshy protuberances, many of which have poisonous stinging hairs that cause pain when touched. They are commonly known as 'Iramushi' (smelt bugs). The Iraga moth Monema flavescens (illustration) is found in China, southeastern Siberia, the Korean Peninsula, and Japan.
