Gaia - Gaia (English spelling)

A Greek goddess who personifies the earth. She is also called Ge. She corresponds to the Roman Tellus. She is often identified with or confused with other earth goddesses such as Demeter, Ceres, and Cybele. According to Hesiod, she was born from the abyss of Chaos along with Tartarus and Eros, married her son Uranus and gave birth to the Titans, Cyclopes, and Hecatonchires, and also persuaded her son Cronus to cut off his genitals. From their blood she gave birth to the Erinyes, Gigas, and Melias, and then she mated with her son Pontus and gave birth to Nereus, Thaumas, Phorcys, Ceto, and Eurybia. She is also said to have given birth to many other monsters. Her most distinctive power is to be a witness to oaths.
