A port city in the Taranaki region on the west coast of the North Island, New Zealand. It is the largest city on the Taranaki Plains. Its climate is warm and humid with little annual range. It was founded in 1841 by the New Plymouth Company with the assistance of the New Zealand Company. The surrounding Taranaki Plains are New Zealand's largest dairy farming region, and dairy products are exported. It is a tourist base near Egmont National Park, centered on Mount Egmont (2,517m), about 30km to the south. Since 1969, natural gas has been developed offshore (Maui Gas Field), and is used for thermal power generation and other purposes, and is sent to Auckland by pipeline.
